Sr. Automation Engineer for Power Generation Projects

LOCATION: Dallas & Houston, Texas Areas

The Sr. Automation Engineer position requires a highly motivated, detailed individual who is self-directed and able to professionally engage with customers. This candidate shall have a working knowledge and experience with Combustion Control and Burner Management Systems that are applied in the Utility Power and Industrial Energy markets along with various types of Power and Auxiliary Boilers including HRSGs and Duct Burners.

Responsibilities:

  • Interpreting customer specifications, drawings, and documentation requirements, along with industrial standards such as NFPA, CSA, UL508 and NEMA, then translating these requirements into component bills of material, electrical and control system drawings for CCS and BMS control panels and development of control strategies. 

  • Perform programming and configuration including development of logic and process control strategies for Combustion Control Systems (CCS) and Burner Management Systems (BMS) that are applied to large utility-power and industrial boilers along with HRSGs in accordance with NFPA-85 standards. 

  • Perform HMI screen development and associated configuration of ICS supplied Operator Workstations, Engineering Workstations, and Historian packages. 

  • Support ICS business development and sales team with reviewing customer RFQ specifications, assistance with proposal development and detailed project estimating.

  • Read and understand scope documentation detailing control system functionality required for the implementation of PLC and DCS programs.

  • Development of logic and control strategies for PLC and DCS based control systems.

  • Develop simulation logic to support the functional and dynamic testing of PLC and HMI systems. This will involve testing of integrated control systems to ensure the required functionality and proper operation meets each customer’s specifications and expectations.

  • Train customers on use and operation of supplied control system deliverables. 

  • Provide direction and interface engineering with the ICS and outside panel shops along electrical installation contractors and third-party vendors as required. 

  • Perform on-site start up and commissioning of ICS supplied CCS and BMS control systems.

  • Capable of performing tuning and optimization of supplied CCS and BMS control systems.

      Qualifications & Required Skills:

      • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with fifteen (15) years minimum of related control system experience. 

      • Strong knowledge of NFPA guidelines that apply to CCS and BMS design and applications. 

      • ISA 84 Certifications for SIS and BMS applications is a benefit 

      • Proven experience in effectively programming and integration of the following control system platforms listed below: 

        • Allen Bradley Logix PLCs
        • Emerson Delta V
        • Invensys Triconex Platforms
      • Proven experience in effectively programming and configuration of the following HMI platforms listed below: 

        • Rockwell Automation Factory Talk SE & ME, Plant PAX

      • To establish design criteria and specifications for process control systems in accordance with the project requirements.

      • Effectively communicate the project scope, completion dates, and technical expectations required to the ICS automation team for each respective project along with assigning tasks to all technical resources.

      • Industry experience to draw from which provides intimate understanding of customer motives and business drivers.

      • Ensure that required prerequisites (e.g. design inputs, tools, documentation, deliverables, schedule, budget) are in place prior to commencing work.

      • Must be capable of producing and/or approving functional and detailed design specifications.

      • Capable of identifying and analyzing design changes and modify design documents accordingly.

      • Executes every project to appropriate standards and quality management system requirements.

      • Select equipment and materials to project requirements.

      • Must be willing to share technical knowledge with project team, proposal team, product business units, sales, consultants, etc.

      • Capable of managing progress and technical problems and/or changes within the project team or scope.

      • Serves as a technical interface with customers, establishing professional relationships to ensure that the technical project requirements are fully defined, agreed and delivered within project scope, schedule and budget.

      • Acts as technical interface to 3rd party suppliers to assure correct functionality of the 3rd party deliverables including the correct integration of those deliverables in the ICS scope.

      • Must be capable of monitoring and controlling the technical project scope against the project plan and Functional & Detailed Design Specifications to ensure compliance and on‐time delivery.

      • Monitoring progress and performance of engineering contractor / equipment vendors during the execution of work.

      • Inspect integrated control panels and equipment at the ICS factory or third‐party facilities to ensure compliance with specifications and design documentation.

      • Capable of performing tuning and optimization of supplied control systems.

      Qualifications & Required Skills:

      • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with twelve (12) years minimum of related control system experience in the Oil and Gas Industry or equivalent experience.

      • Strong knowledge of TUV, IEC, ATEX, and NFPA guidelines that apply to the control system designs applied in the Oil & Gas Industry.

      • ISA 84 Certifications for SIS applications involving SIL Levels 1, 2, & 3 is highly beneficial including strong familiarity with IEC‐61508, 61511, and 61131.

      • Proven experience with conducting or involvement with a Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF), and performing PFD & PFH calculations determining SIL rated systems, Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) is a highly beneficial.

      • Proven experience in programming and integration of the following control system platforms listed below:
