The Control System Engineer position requires a highly motivated, detailed individual who is self-directed and able to professionally engage with customers.  This candidate shall have a working knowledge and experience with Combustion Control and Burner Management Systems that are applied in the Utility Power Industry along with various types of Power and Auxiliary Boilers including HRSGs and Duct Burners.

Responsibilities:

  • Ability to lead a highly qualified control system and automation engineering team on large and multiple projects with an end‐result of delivering high‐quality control system solutions that meets or exceeds every customers’ expectations.

  • To establish design criteria and specifications for process control systems in accordance with the project requirements.

  • Effectively communicate the project scope, completion dates, and technical expectations required to the ICS automation team for each respective project along with assigning tasks to all technical resources.

  • Industry experience to draw from which provides intimate understanding of customer motives and business drivers.

  • Ensure that required prerequisites (e.g. design inputs, tools, documentation, deliverables, schedule, budget) are in place prior to commencing work.

  • Must be capable of producing and/or approving functional and detailed design specifications.

  • Capable of identifying and analyzing design changes and modify design documents accordingly.

  • Executes every project to appropriate standards and quality management system requirements.

  • Select equipment and materials to project requirements.

  • Must be willing to share technical knowledge with project team, proposal team, product business units, sales, consultants, etc.

  • Capable of managing progress and technical problems and/or changes within the project team or scope.

  • Serves as a technical interface with customers, establishing professional relationships to ensure that the technical project requirements are fully defined, agreed and delivered within project scope, schedule and budget.

  • Acts as technical interface to 3rd party suppliers to assure correct functionality of the 3rd party deliverables including the correct integration of those deliverables in the ICS scope.

  • Must be capable of monitoring and controlling the technical project scope against the project plan and Functional & Detailed Design Specifications to ensure compliance and on‐time delivery.

  • Monitoring progress and performance of engineering contractor / equipment vendors during the execution of work.

  • Inspect integrated control panels and equipment at the ICS factory or third‐party facilities to ensure compliance with specifications and design documentation.

  • Interpreting customer specifications, drawings, and scope documentation requirements, along with industrial standards such as NFPA, CSA, UL508 and NEMA, then translating these requirements into component bills of material, electrical and control system drawings for control panel integration, and development of control system strategies.

  • Support ICS business development activities and sales team with reviewing customer RFQ specifications, assist with providing input to the ICS proposal team along with detailed project estimating.

  • Read and understand scope documentation detailing control system functionality required for the implementation of PLC and DCS architecture design and program development.

  • Development of logic and control strategies for PLC and DCS based critical process and safety control systems.

  • Develop simulation logic to support the functional and dynamic testing of PLC and HMI systems. This will involve testing of integrated control systems to ensure the required functionality and proper operation meets each customer’s specifications and expectations.

  • Train customers on use and operation of supplied control system deliverables.

  • Provide direction and interface engineering with the ICS panel shop, third‐party integrators, electrical installation contractors, and/or any third‐party vendors as required.

  • Perform on‐site start up and commissioning of ICS supplied control systems at customer sites which may require travel.

  • Capable of performing tuning and optimization of supplied control systems.

Qualifications & Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with twelve (12) years minimum of related control system experience in the Oil and Gas Industry.

  • Strong knowledge of TUV, IEC, ATEX, and NFPA guidelines that apply to the control system designs applied in the Oil & Gas Industry.

  • ISA 84 Certifications for SIS applications involving SIL Levels 1, 2, & 3 is highly beneficial including strong familiarity with IEC‐61508, 61511, and 61131.

  • Proven experience with conducting or involvement with a Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF), and performing PFD & PFH calculations determining SIL rated systems, Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) is a highly beneficial.

  • Proven experience in programming and integration of the following control system platforms listed below:
    • Allen Bradley Logix PLCs
    • Rockwell Automation AADvance SIS System
    • Emerson Delta V (M & S Series) Process & Safety Platforms
    • Invensys Triconex Tricon & Trident SIS Systems
    • Honeywell Experian DCS
    • Schneider Electric PLCs
  • Proven experience in programming and configuration of the following HMI platforms listed below:
    • Rockwell Automation Factory Talk SE & ME, Plant PAX
    • Wonderware System Platform (Archestra) and Intouch
    • Emerson Delta V
    • Honeywell Experian DCS
  • Experience with client / server architectures including virtualization with VMWare is a plus.

  • Knowledge of OSI PI and other Historian packages is a plus.

  • Experience with engineering design programs such as AutoCAD, Microsoft Visio, etc.

  • Proficient with Microsoft software applications (MS Word/Excel/Power‐Point/Visio).

  • Knowledge of HMI and control system communication networks including related hardware such as Ethernet switches and media converters, various types of communication protocols and media that are applied in redundant and simplex architecture designs.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Work autonomously while cultivating a team environment with fellow automation engineers and designers.

  • Have excellent troubleshooting skills.

  • Effective at communicating with management, customers, and vendors.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of the project, from Front End Engineering & Design (FEED) through Detailed Design, Commissioning and Start‐Up.
  • Must place a significant emphasis on managing every project with the intention of increasing contract value and/or revenue along with delivering profit margin expectations that will require a minimum of the following items listed below:
    • Manage customers for each project effectively by capturing scope creep and impacts along with generating change orders accordingly to avoid low or negative profit margins.
    • Directing and communicating to project team members of what each project’s scope, schedule, and budget entails. This will also involve making sure that all project team members understand what their projects and respective tasks entail in order to deliver on or before the required completion dates.
    • Developing project schedules and reports for customers and project team.
  • Develop and manage resource allocation tools to ensure that all project team resources are billable and utilized effectively.
  • Must have proven experience in building and maintaining strong customer relationships along with being able to interface with customers effectively in a positive manner.
  • Execute technology solutions for our control, safety and information systems projects in the industrial process markets that we serve.
  • Lead automation engineers, designers, panel integration & fabrication resources, and start‐up / commissioning personnel on a wide variety of control system and automation projects.
  • Support the proposal development team with reviewing commercial and technical content of RFQ specifications and providing comments to support this activity.
  • Direction and training of junior controls project management and engineering staff.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve client relationships.
  • Follow and take a pro‐active role in corporate health safety and environmental programs.
  • Provide excellent practical client service with a commitment to technical excellence.
  • Collaborate with other ICS offices and project teams on projects.

Qualifications & Required Skills:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering
  • Strong experience with MS Project, Primavera and SAP is a plus
